Welcome to another guide article designed with gamers in mind! We’re here to discuss preparations for the Dragon Slayer 1 quest. This quest focuses on the journey to slay Elvarg, the dragon of Crandor. This quest is considered one of, if not the most challenging quest for free-to-play members.
However, despite the quest’s difficult reputation, it is also among the most rewarding. If you need more time to dedicate to this challenge, you can find perfect OSRS accounts for sale in stock! Now, let’s check out what it takes to slay that dragon.
Players that complete this quest can find themselves gaining the ability to equip the dragon platebody, rune platebody, and green d’hide body, as well as the many variations of these pieces.
How to Get Started
To begin this quest, you will first have to have used any Dragonfire protection, though you do not have to have completed them. Now, onto the necessary steps. Firstly, you’ll need to make your way to the Champions’ Guild south of Varrock. You will then need to speak with the Guildmaster and ask for a quest.
Next, you will be advised to visit Oziach in the northwest corner of Edgeville, located near the Wilderness ditch and Edgeville Monastery. Once you get to Oziach, he will explain that he can not simply sell rune Platebodies to players; they must first defeat the world-renowned green dragon, Elvarg. Elvarg is located on the scorched island of Crandor south of Entrana.
Once you have gathered this information, return to the Champions’ Guild and speak with the Guildmaster again. When you inform him of your news, he will be shocked and tell you that three pieces of a map are needed to find the route to the island. As well as these map pieces, you will need a boat; and a shield to protect from the Dragonfire.
Important Notes
Ask the Guildmaster every question you can; failing to do so will hinder your progress through the quest.
Save time by discussing purchasing a ship with the Guildmaster. You’ll need to do this before speaking with Klarense later in the quest in Port Sarum, as well as saving time by removing the need to return to the Guild after collecting the map pieces (the pieces can be obtained in any order).
Ask the Guildmaster where to find Melzar’s piece of the map. Locating it awards you the maze key; ensure you have open inventory slots to receive it. You will also have to ask him where to acquire the remaining two map pieces and the anti-dragon shield.
How to get the Anti-Dragon shield
Now we know what to do, let’s look at how to do it. If you want to acquire the anti-dragon shield, head to Lumbridge. Once there, speak with Duke Horacio on the first floor of Lumbridge Castle. He will provide you with the shield.
How to obtain the Map Pieces
First Piece
Melzar’s Maze is the location of the first piece. The Maze is located northwest of Rimmington and west of Port Sarim, south of the Crafting Guild.
To enter the Maze, you will need to use the key provided by the Guildmaster, once inside here’s what you need to do:
Kill the king-tailed small zombie rat to obtain a red key and use the key on the northwestern red door. You can identify the correct room by ensuring the room has a bookcase, table, poster, and chairs. Once you’re in the right location, make your way up the ladder. This should bring you to a room of ghosts.
You will then need to kill the capeless, hooded ghost wearing a tube top; doing so will reward you with an orange key. Next, make your way through the second door from the north side and climb the ladder once more. You should now find yourself in a room of skeletons.
Next, you’re tasked with killing the skeleton with the small, round shield. This will provide you with the yellow key for your next step. Make your way to the southwestern door and descend the ladder at the back of that room. Continue to make your way down the ladder until you are in a room in the basement. This room should have two zombies and a blue door.
Now you are located in the basement room, proceed to slay the zombies until you receive the blue key. Use this key on the blue door to progress to the next room. Ensure you do not exit via the normal door; this will reset the Maze.
Once you enter the blue door, you must kill Melzar the Mad. Once you have done this, you should receive the magenta key; use this to open the magenta door.
Once inside this room, there will be a lesser demon; you will have to take this demon down if you want the next key, the green key. Use this to open the green door and begin the next steps.
Once you enter the green door, you should be greeted with a chest. Search the chest, and you should find the first piece of the map. Ensure you claim this piece and then make your way back up the ladder and out of the Maze.
The Second Piece
You can obtain the second piece of the map by completing another endeavor; let’s check out how exactly to do that.
Firstly, you will need to collect and create a few things for the journey. You will need to create an unforced bowl (via the crafting skill)ain, a Wizard’s mind bomb, a lobster pot, and a silk piece.
Once you have acquired these items, speak with the Oracle. You can find the Oracle on the northern end, southwest of the shabby tent near Ice Mountain. You can enter the mountain directly west of the entrance to the Monastery.
When you speak with the Oracle, they will give you a riddle. Once you have this riddle, make your way back down the mountain, heading slightly south. You can enter the Dwarven Mine via a ladder under the canopy where the dwarves reside; this is where you will need to ensure you have the items mentioned above.
Once you enter, head to the square room located in the northeast corner and open the magic doorPlace your items on the door to open it; when you do so, you can then open the chest inside to search for the second piece of the map.
The Third Piece
To get your hands on the fin piece, speak with Wormbrain. Then, head to the Goblin Village and speak with the goblin generals. Here you will be informed by General Bentnoze that Wormbrain has been arrested. He is now located in the jail in Port Sarim.
Keep in mind that you must have asked the Guildmaster about the Lozars map piece to attack Wormbrain. You will then need to attack him using Ranged or Magic; once his health has depleted to 0, he will drop the map and shout, “Ow!”. You will then be able to telegraph the final piece!
Commandeering your Vessel
The next thing on your list is to get your hands on Lady Lumbridge, the ship you’ll need to conduct your voyage. This guide segment will inform you of what you’ll need to do to make this happen.
For this part, you’re going to need 90 steel nails and three planks; this is to repair the Lady Lumbridge. To do so, take your planks, nails, hammer, and 2,000 coins to Port Sarim. First, you will need to locate Klarense, the sailor; he should be on the second most southern dock. He will sell you the Lady Lumbridge for the coins mentioned, and you can begin work on your new ship!
You will have to click the ship’s hull three times, and that will ensure the ship is ready to set sail!
Finding your Captain
Once you have repaired your ship, you’ll need a captain to direct you to your battle. Make your way to Draynor Village and find Ned. He should be residing in the house just northeast of the Wise Old Man’s home. He will accept if you ask him to take you on this voyage as your captain. Provide him with the map and make your way.
Preparing for the Battle
Before you make your journey to Crandor, you’ll need to prepare. First, you will need to ensure your anti-dragon shield is equipped. We also recommend taking an antifire potion to lower the damage dealt. Going into battle with these and taking direct Dragonfire hits can significantly deplete Combat and Prayer stats.
Another thing we recommend is taking teleportation runes or another form of teleportation. This will come in handy should you be close to death during battle. As for other preparations, we recommend filling your inventory with food for healing.
Choosing a Combat Style
To get into the heart of the action, you’ll first have to select a combat style. Then, you’ll have to pick a lane to go further, whether it be ranged, melee or magic.
- Melee– this option is a favorite amongst players, as Elvarg doesn’t solely use her Dragonfire attack during close combat, often choosing melee attacks. These attacks are far less powerful, putting you at an instant advantage. Stay calm; remember, this quest is considered one of the most difficult.
- Ranged– Though Elvarg is also weak to ranged attacks, this method may not be the best option for free-to-play users; due to their lack of access to antifire potions, equipping an anti-dragon shield becomes even more critical.
- Magic– Magic is your last choice, and for a good reason. Dragons deflect magic attacks with little effort. However, we recommend using tier-2 Magic or higher if you choose this combat style.
Make your Way!
All left to do now is sail to Crandor and find Elvarg. So, make your way there and prepare for quite the fight. She won’t make it easy, but we’re confident you’ll take her down in no time!
